Here was the building where not so long ago I had watched the Under-the-Flag SS – wedding. The building was there almost undamaged but seemed a lot less glamorous and celebrated that day. I saw a soldier sitting under one of the trees with his back against the trunk. As I walked by I first thought that he was asleep but something did not seem right. I looked at him for a minute, he is not asleep I thought, “Hi there,” I said real loud. Nothing happened, I used my foot, to move his boot. No response I bet his lungs are busted from the explosion I concluded and got away from there. It was very weird and eerie, as I stood in the middle of the Koenigs-Square looking in any direction, I could see other areas of town never before visible from the square. Most of the town was flat to the ground. Through one of the gaping cavities I could see the area where the Altstadt (Old town) used to be. The Altstadt was built in the 14th century and was a very romantic place with the narrow cobblestone streets where one cold shake hands almost from window to window across the road, with the many fountains and gas lanterns. Many of the poor people lived in the beautiful storybook like timbered houses. I walked toward the area and came upon a horrible sight. The Altstadt was leveled, smoking and a sickening smell accompanied the smoke. The people here had no chance to survive an air raid. Just about all of them had been burned to death. As the little houses caught on fire and lit up like match sticks, the people had fled from the cellars but were driven back by the intense heat of the flames and were then trapped in the cellars to burn to death. It was not hard to figure out where the bad smell came from. Adjacent to the Altstadt stood the 14th century Martins church. The inside was still on fire and parts of the two huge towers were gone. I could see the river in the near distance and wondered why the people had not made a run for it during the early part of the air raid. Maybe there was not enough time.
